Winter is behind us, but the challenges facing the energy sector related to the upcoming autumn-winter period remain relevant. Ukraine and Ukrainians are demonstrating extraordinary resilience to the difficult conditions caused by the hostile and aggressive behavior and attacks of the terrorist state. But the effect of the strikes is accumulating, and with it the problems of the energy sector. It is important to start taking care of the upcoming winter today, and, above all, to give signals regarding the decisions that should be made at the highest state level to form the appropriate policy so that we can quickly and fully restore the operation of the energy sector and prepare for the upcoming autumn-winter period.
This was emphasized by the Vice President of Energy Club, Head of the State Agency for Energy Efficiency (2021-2023) Valerii Bezus on the Energy Freedom talk show on March 7. The experts discussed the results of the winter of 2024/2025, challenges, recovery and prospects for the development of the energy sector.
“The work on the fourth report of the general assessment of damage and needs in the restoration of the economy of Ukraine under the auspices of the World Bank was recently completed. We have carried out very intensive work on updating the data on this report in the energy sector. According to experts, as of the end of last year, direct losses in the energy sector have doubled and amount to over $20 billion. The largest losses are recorded in the electricity generation sector, although all segments have suffered damage. We are grateful to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and energy professionals for their resilience. At the same time, we understand that the enemy is adapting its tactics to destroy Ukraine’s energy sector, and last year demonstrated this,” Valerii Bezus noted.
“According to the assessment of the team that worked on the RDNA-4 report, almost $70 billion is needed to fully restore the energy sector. It is clear that this resource cannot be obtained in the coming months, the question is whether it will be available in the coming years. But prioritization and well-thought-out high-quality preparation for the recovery process, the implementation of recovery projects lay the foundation for the further sustainability of the energy sector, the entire infrastructure and the economy of Ukraine.” Also, it is time to reform the energy sector and prepare for European integration,” the vice president of Energy Club emphasized.
