GEN-I Group, the newest member of the Energy Club, is the leading electricity trader in South-eastern Europe. Established in 2004, it is one of the fastest growing and most innovative participants in the European energy markets. The main pillars of GEN-I’s activities encompass trading and supply of energy on both wholesale and retail markets.
In an exclusive interview with the Energy Club media department, Jan Bohinec, Trading Director of GEN-I, reveals the secret of their international success, strategic goals for the coming years, their place in the Ukrainian energy market and benefits of membership in the Energy Club.
GEN-I Group consists of the Slovenian parent company GEN-I, d.o.o. and its subsidiaries. While focusing on innovations, it continues to be one of the fastest growing participants in the European energy markets. The main pillars of GEN-I’s activities encompass trading and supply of energy on both wholesale and retail markets. By focusing on its customers’ needs, and transparent and affordable offerings, GEN-I has grown into the largest and first carbon free supplier of electricity in Slovenia. In terms of GEN-I’s role in wholesale markets, it is the leading electricity trader in South-eastern Europe. Through diversified trading infrastructure, GEN-I successfully exploits the synergies from the geographical expansion to new strategic markets as well as the connection between more liquid Western and less liquid South-eastern European markets, while also complementing its offerings by the provision of services related to the green transformation – with a strong focus on PPAs and RES management services including ancillary and BESS.
– Jan Bohinec, welcome to Energy Club! What achievements is GEN-I proud of?
– We are energy traders, present in 26 countries from UK in the West to Ukraine and Turkey in the East. We have an extensive global infrastructure with which we expand the markets of our trading activities. We are present on all major energy exchanges in Europe and beyond, which is bringing us among the best dealers in the region both in terms of trading volume and trust.
In the prestigious Energy Risk Commodity Rankings 2025 GEN-I has once again solidified its position in the European energy market, being voted ‘Best Overall Energy Dealer‘ and ‘Best Overall Power Dealer‘. This extraordinary accomplishment places us among the elite global market players and underscores our unwavering commitment to delivering top-notch services and value to our business partners. Above all, this stands as a testament to the trust and valued international partnerships GEN-I has fostered.
With a legacy of success in the Energy Risk Commodity Rankings for more than a decade, GEN-I has consistently dominated in the rankings, particularly in South-eastern Europe. Over recent years, business partners, such as other established companies on wholesale energy markets, have recognised our increasing role in the European energy sector, honouring us with tier rankings in Germany, Italy, Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), and South-eastern Europe (SEE). Qualities where GEN-I does particularly well as perceived by partners were pricing, reliability, flexibility, speed of execution, integrity, market knowledge, creativity, and innovation.
These honours further motivate us to strengthen our commitments to wholesale counterparties and enhance the tailored services and products we provide.
By supplying carbon-free electricity, we give customers the opportunity to choose the energy source for their electricity consumption. We are the leading supplier of solar power plants in Slovenia and expanding our presence in the supply of solar energy to new market segments beyond our borders, including Ukraine.
– Can you summarize the main areas of activity of the GEN-I group?
– First of all, we are suppliers and traders in electricity and natural gas. We purchase electricity from large producers, producers of renewable energy sources and from combined heat and power plants. We provide self-sufficiency and energy efficiency services for individuals and legal entities, offer extended services to business partners and consumers and develop innovative products and services.
– And what about business activities?
– Our business activities have four main pillars. GEN-I’s advanced wholesale activities include commodity trading, portfolio management services and innovative trading solutions. We provide competitive energy supply of electricity and natural gas to end consumers and advanced supply services to business partners. Innovative green energy services are in our daily focus, enriched by customer-centric sustainable solutions. Last, but not least, we are experts in solar production on B2C, B2B and utilities scale.
– What are the key products and services provided by the group?
– At GEN-I Group, we are focused on energy products, particularly related to the electricity and gas sectors, including EUAs and GoOs, physical and financial products and PPA’s. And let’s not forget our intelligent energy management services, developed to optimize the use of production units and maximize revenue.
– And finally, tell us about the prospects for the future.
– We will continue to build our international footprint through global trade in a range of energy products and intelligent energy management services. Among them, let me mention at least 3 key areas:
In order to successfully balance energy demand and supply, we are developing battery energy storage system (BESS) unit management with a comprehensive and integrated customized solution for progressive flexibility.
We are one of the largest ancillary services aggregators in the region, managing over 200 MW of distributed resources from over 150 companies on the Slovenian, Croatian and Austrian markets with constant expansion, and this is just a beginning!
We provide and continue to improve our services for automated, cost-effective and worry-free monitoring of power units.
– What was the main incentive for the company to join the Energy Club? What are your expectations of this membership, what do you see as its benefits?
– As I said, we have an extensive global infrastructure, with which we expand our trading activities to different geographical markets and a presence on all major energy exchanges in Europe and beyond.
The Ukrainian market of electricity, natural gas, renewable sources and other products is a priority for GEN-I. GEN-I Kiev aims to expand this activity and become one of the trading partners in Ukraine.
Energy Club is a community of energy industry professionals that brings together experts, analysts and company managers to exchange knowledge, experience and ideas. The Club has the opportunity to help energy market players solve key issues, expand business contacts, share expert experience and constantly be informed in the energy and related areas.
GEN-I Kiev, as a member of the Club, will actively participate in events and help the Club, thanks to its existing European experience, expand its areas of activity and develop a common electricity and gas market in Ukraine with the EU.
– What would you like to wish other Energy Club members and potential partners?
– The biggest challenge in the Ukrainian electricity market is the lack of regulatory stability in an often-uncertain business environment. This, in turn, prevents significant foreign investment in the electricity market. In our opinion, it is important to take corrective measures when necessary. Now is the time to consolidate the market and, together with the Energy Club, promote its development.
