The completion of the Kherson NPP will strengthen the power system and make it possible to compensate for the capacity deficit

05.02.2025

The completion of power units No. 3 and No. 4 of the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP), which, according to the statement of the JSC Energoatom, are already 80% and 25% ready, respectively, is a critically important step for strengthening Ukraine’s energy security and ensuring stable electricity supply in the conditions of post-war reconstruction.

This was stated in a comment to RBC-Ukraine by Ivan Hryhoruk, Vice President of Energy Club.

“Nuclear energy is the basis of energy stability. The completion of the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant will not only help compensate for the loss of capacity due to the war, but will also contribute to the country’s economic development in the long term, while simultaneously giving impetus to the development of new shunting generation and electrical networks in our country,” Ivan Hryhoruk emphasized.

The new power units will provide additional capacity to cover the electricity deficit that arose after the damage to the generation facilities.

The construction will also contribute to the development of domestic industry, job creation and attraction of foreign investment.

According to the expert, Ukraine now has a unique chance to commission two nuclear units with a total capacity of 2.2 GW in a short time and for relatively little money.
