Termination of gas transit through Ukraine: consequences for Transnistria, Moldova and the EU

07.01.2025

On the air of the program “RANOK.LIVE” on the YouTube channel News.LIVE, Vice President of Energy Club Ivan Hryhoruk commented on the situation that arose as a result of the suspension of Russian gas transit through the territory of Ukraine.

The main focus of the discussion was the situation in the unrecognized Transnistria, where widespread power outages have been introduced and the supply of hot water and heating has been stopped. Ivan Hryhoruk noted that the Moldovan DRES, located in the territory of Transnistria, previously provided 70-80% of the electricity supply to Moldova and Transnistria. Due to the suspension of gas transit, the station switched to burning coal, the reserves of which, according to the expert, are designed for only 20 days of operation. This led to a limitation of the DRES capacity and the introduction of energy restrictions.

The political aspects of the crisis were also discussed on the air. Political scientist Valeriy Honcharuk noted that Russia’s actions are aimed at destabilizing the situation in both Transnistria and Moldova. The cessation of gas supplies could lead to an increase in the cost of utilities and negatively affect electoral sentiment in Moldova.

Ivan Hryhoruk, for his part, noted that Moldova was preparing for such a development and switched to purchasing European gas from December 1, which led to a 27.5% increase in prices for the population. Moldovagaz offered Tiraspoltransgaz to supply gas to the territory of Transnistria, but was refused.

Regarding the impact on the EU, Ivan Hryhoruk noted that the volume of gas that passed through Ukraine amounted to only 4% of the total EU balance. European countries have already adapted to the changes and replaced this volume with gas from storage facilities in Germany, Italy and other European gas hubs.

At the end of the interview, Ivan Hryhoruk touched upon the topic of the new model of operation of the Ukrainian GTS, which was mentioned in the Ministry of Energy and the Government. He noted that this issue requires further development and discussion.

Key theses:

  • The cessation of gas transit led to an energy crisis in Transnistria.
  • Moldova switched to purchasing European gas, which led to an increase in prices.
  • Russia is using the gas issue to destabilize the situation in the region.
  • The impact of the cessation of transit on the EU is minimal.
  • Ukraine plans to implement a new model of operation of the GTS.
