Mission extended. IAEA inspectors remain to monitor EU-critical substations in Ukraine

04.11.2024

IAEA representatives have continued their mission in Ukraine and remain at key power substations critical to the operation of nuclear power plants. This decision is extremely important, as attacks on these facilities threaten the nuclear and radiation safety of not only Ukraine, but also the whole of Europe. The presence of international experts at the substations is a clear signal to the world community that attacks on critical infrastructure are unacceptable.

Ivan Hryhoruk, Vice President of Energy Club, commented on the situation, emphasizing the importance of this decision for Ukraine: “The decision to expand IAEA missions to substations critical to nuclear power plants, which was agreed upon between President Volodymyr Zelensky and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, is extremely important. This is a clear signal to the civilized world, the international community, that attacks on these facilities are indeed unacceptable.”

In addition, the expert noted that the continuation of the IAEA mission is an effective step to demonstrate to the whole world what is happening in Ukraine. “The IAEA is a very important institution – the international atomic energy agency, which involves a large number of international countries that are participants in nuclear generation and other components of the nuclear energy industry,” he added.

Ivan Hryhoruk also emphasized that the stability of nuclear generation is critically important for the energy balance of Ukraine, since nuclear generation provides up to 60% of total electricity consumption. “The stability of nuclear generation plays an extremely important role, and radiation safety is the security of both Ukraine and the region as a whole. That is why the involvement of international experts in such missions is extremely important,” he concluded.
