Comprehensive Approach to Distributed Generation: Experience of the "Energo Group" Association

05.03.2026

On February 19, 2026, the online talk show “NETWORKS IN SPOTLIGHT: Technological solutions for the sustainability of Ukrainian DSOs” took place. During the event, participants shared practical experience in implementing energy projects amidst constant challenges.

Serhii Harmashev, Managing Partner of the “Energo Group” association of companies, shared his vision for operating during blackouts and the transition to distributed generation.

“Energo Group” is a powerful consortium of experienced energy market players who have consolidated their competencies to implement large-scale and complex EPC projects (from design to construction and maintenance). The association includes four key companies:

  • “UBI-Group” (Ukraine): Operating in the market since 2000. Specializes in industrial construction and the implementation of energy infrastructure facilities (solar power plants, gas piston units, energy storage systems). The company has its own infrastructure design group, supplies metal structures, and is an official distributor of hot-dip galvanizing services.
  • SM Invest & Construction (Netherlands): A company with European experience in energy facility development. It holds European Commission accreditation. Notable projects include the development of a 148 MW solar power plant in the Mykolaiv region (jointly with KATEK Solar). Currently, it is developing large wind projects in Ukraine (over 100 MW).
  • “Khoros” (Ukraine): A well-known engineering company specializing in the design and construction of high-voltage substations, power lines up to 750 kV, and generation facilities. It provides a full project implementation cycle.
  • Energy Idea Group: An official dealer and distributor of European and Chinese equipment. It has successful experience working with financing programs, particularly through Ukrgasbank and EBRD lending.

Competencies: From Idea to Kilowatt

Thanks to the synergy of these four companies, “Energo Group” provides a full “turnkey” implementation cycle for energy projects. This process covers:

  • Development: Feasibility studies, land management, obtaining technical specifications (TU), and permits.
  • Design: Schematic and working designs.
  • Equipment supply and general contractor services.
  • Construction, commissioning, and startup operations.
  • Dispatching, warranty, and post-warranty service.

Solutions for Stability: Cogeneration, Solar, and BESS

Serhii Harmashev noted that the group currently actively supplies and installs cogeneration units (particularly based on Jenbacher equipment), inverters, solar panels, and cable-and-wire products.

A special emphasis is placed on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). “Energo Group” offers ready-made container solutions with capacities of 3.85 MW and 5 MW. These systems are equipped with transformer groups, integrated with BMS/EMS, and adapted both for market operations (direct connection to DSO and Ukrenergo networks) and for the autonomous operation of industrial enterprises.

Currently, the company has developed financial and business models for hybrid facilities that allow for profit optimization by combining generation and storage systems. Among the group’s current projects are:

  • Construction of gas piston cogeneration;
  • Development of BESS projects with a capacity of 20–30 MW;
  • Creation of multi-hybrid stations (wind + solar + storage) throughout Ukraine.

The Future Belongs to Decentralization

Summarizing the presentation, Serhii Harmashev emphasized the strategic vision of “Energo Group”: the future of Ukrainian energy lies entirely within the realm of distributed generation.

Integrated solutions that combine cogeneration, renewable sources, and balancing capacities (BESS) are the only reliable path to the energy security of enterprises and the resilience of the energy system as a whole.
