Engineering Without Borders: Energy Safety Group on Nuclear Power, SMRs, and European Cooperation

Energy Club continues to grow, bringing together an increasing number of Ukrainian and European companies for which professional dialogue, partnership, and the joint search for solutions are an essential part of the energy sector’s development.

Among the community’s newest members is Energy Safety Group (ES Group), an international engineering company operating at the intersection of the Ukrainian and European energy markets.

Over ten years, ES Group has grown from a small Ukrainian team into an international EPC partner, delivering projects in nuclear safety and critical infrastructure in Ukraine and across Europe. Today the company is expanding international cooperation, working to diversify technologies and equipment for VVER reactors, and taking part in shaping new technological solutions for the nuclear power industry.

In an interview with Energy Club, ES Group CEO Vadym Ivanov spoke about the company’s international development and strategic priorities, the outlook for VVER technology diversification and small modular reactor (SMR) development. He also focused on integrating Ukrainian companies into European supply chains, building engineering competencies, and the role of business in strengthening Ukraine’s resilience and energy security.

— Energy Safety Group is an international engineering company delivering integrated solutions for nuclear power and critical infrastructure facilities. We work across every stage of a project’s life cycle — from engineering, safety analysis, and design documentation to production organization, supply, installation, and commissioning, — noted Vadym Ivanov.
A separate area of our work is preparing technical and analytical materials for the industry: safety cases, engineering studies, regulatory changes, and the adaptation of international standards. We regularly present our expertise at international conferences, in professional associations, and in working groups.
Over ten years, the company has grown from a Ukrainian engineering enterprise into an international EPC partner with a portfolio of more than 20 international safety projects and around 20 R&D projects for critical infrastructure.

— Which recent projects or solutions do you consider the most successful?

— Recent years have been a period of major international growth for the company. We have expanded our portfolio of international nuclear safety projects, become a qualified partner of Westinghouse and Framatome, and are delivering projects for nuclear power plants in Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Romania, and Armenia.

This year, Energy Safety Group was selected to take part in the “Ensuring the Operability and Efficiency of Nuclear Facilities Using Artificial Intelligence” project as an engineering partner of Metroscope, part of EDF — another global leader in nuclear power.

We have also completed projects supplying filtered containment venting systems and developing long-term containment cooling systems for Ukrainian NPPs, as well as creating a software and hardware monitoring and control complex for the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility.

An important milestone was joining the Czech Power Industry Alliance, which opens new opportunities for integrating Ukrainian expertise into the European supply chain. Today the company’s team numbers more than 150 specialists, and the experience we’ve accumulated allows us to deliver complex, internationally scaled EPC projects.

— What will Energy Safety Group focus on over the next 1–3 years?

— Diversifying equipment, components, engineering solutions, and technologies for VVER-type reactors remains one of Energy Safety Group’s key areas of development. In recent years, the company has taken part in projects that support replacing Russian technologies, integrating Western solutions, and building an independent European supply chain for operating and modernizing VVER reactors. We plan to strengthen this work further, expanding our participation in projects aimed at improving the safety, reliability, and capacity of nuclear power plants.

Another strategic priority is small modular reactors (SMRs). The company is already closely engaged with the European Industrial Alliance on SMRs and takes part in specialized working groups shaping the future SMR ecosystem. We are building the competencies needed to provide engineering support for such projects: integrating technological solutions, equipment qualification, preparing safety cases, and supporting licensing and compliance with international standards. Our goal is to become one of the key engineering partners for SMR projects in Ukraine.

— Why did you decide to join Energy Club?

— As the scale of its international projects grows, Energy Safety Group is consistently strengthening its involvement in professional communities. These communities create the environment for industry dialogue, partnership development, and showcasing expertise — all of which directly affect the delivery of complex engineering projects. Joining Energy Club was a logical continuation of this strategy and another step toward expanding our professional engagement with Ukraine’s energy community.

— What practical benefits do you expect from Club membership?

— For Energy Safety Group, Energy Club membership opens up opportunities to expand professional contacts in the energy sector and strengthen engagement with potential partners and clients.

At the same time, it’s an opportunity to showcase our own expertise and practical experience in delivering international projects, exchange knowledge, and help shape the professional agenda.

— What topics would you like to discuss within Energy Club?

— First and foremost, practical questions around diversifying equipment, components, engineering solutions, and technologies for VVER reactors, developing the European supply chain, and further integrating Ukrainian companies into it.

The second area is preparation for SMR deployment: regulatory approaches, licensing, supply chain requirements, production localization, and the role of Ukrainian engineering companies.

Separately, we’re interested in developing engineering competencies, training new specialists, knowledge transfer, workforce resilience in the industry under wartime conditions, and building a stronger safety culture.

— How exactly do you plan to participate in Energy Club’s work?

— We’re ready to take part in expert discussions, working groups, analytical research, and professional events, to share our practical experience delivering international projects, and to advance the topics of diversification, engineering competency development, and integrating Ukrainian companies into European supply chains.

— Which formats of cooperation are most valuable for Energy Safety Group?

— We see the greatest value in combining analytics, professional dialogue, partnership-building, and jointly shaping positions on energy sector development. In our view, this kind of engagement helps accelerate the delivery of international projects and strengthens the resilience of the energy sector.

— How do you see the role of business in strengthening energy resilience?

— The resilience of modern energy systems depends largely on how quickly the industry can adopt new technologies, modernize critical infrastructure, and adapt to new challenges. In this process, businesses — and engineering companies like ours in particular — play a much broader role than simply delivering individual projects. They ensure the integration of modern technical solutions, develop modernization projects, confirm that equipment meets safety requirements, support equipment qualification processes, and help operators adopt new technologies.

For Ukraine, this has taken on particular importance under conditions of full-scale war. The stability of the entire energy system depends on the speed of engineering solution delivery, equipment diversification, and the reliability of energy facilities. Under these conditions, every completed project is a contribution to strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructure, reinforcing energy security, and creating the conditions for the industry’s long-term development.

— Which Energy Club initiatives would be most valuable for your company?

— Joint analytical research, professional discussions, support for international cooperation, partnership development, and promoting Ukrainian companies within international supply chains — especially in the areas of diversification and post-war reconstruction.

— What would you like to wish your fellow Club members?

— We wish all Energy Club members open professional dialogue, strong partnerships, and joint projects that help strengthen the resilience, reliability, safety, and energy independence of Ukraine’s energy sector. It is precisely the joint work of this professional community that today lays the foundation for its future development.

The full-scale war has significantly reshaped the priorities of energy sector development. Questions of diversifying equipment, components, engineering solutions, and technologies have long moved beyond purely technical matters. They directly affect the state’s energy security, the resilience of the energy system, and the industry’s ability to recover quickly after attacks.

Ukrainian companies have already proven that they can work to international standards, integrate Western technologies, deliver complex engineering projects, and become part of European supply chains. This experience is now valuable to the entire international community, as it demonstrates how the energy sector can adapt to unprecedented challenges while maintaining the reliability, safety, and continuity of critical infrastructure operations.

The development of professional dialogue is no less important. Today’s challenges can no longer be effectively addressed within individual companies, or even within individual sectors alone. They require cooperation among engineers, manufacturers, operators, researchers, international partners, financial institutions, and the state. It is precisely at the intersection of these competencies that the solutions shaping the energy sector’s development over the coming decades are being formed.

Professional platforms like Energy Club create an environment for open dialogue, the exchange of practical experience, and partnership development. Today this has particular value, since the pace of energy infrastructure modernization, Ukraine’s integration into the European energy space, and the gradual reduction of technological dependence on russia all depend on the quality of this kind of engagement.
