What should be the business model for energy supply?

Energy in Ukraine is experiencing one of the most challenging periods in its history. We are forced to balance between emergency operations due to damaged generating capacities and the need to implement long-term solutions for a stable future. In 2025, the industry will face new challenges and opportunities that we, as electricity suppliers, must transform into concrete actions.

From kilowatt-hours to partnership

The traditional role of electricity suppliers is changing. We no longer just sell electricity but are becoming energy partners for our consumers. This means:

  • Helping to optimize consumption.
  • Using flexible demand tools.
  • Implementing new tariff models that consider weather conditions and local generation capabilities.
  • Supporting the installation of personal energy storage systems.
  • Supplying electricity with verified “green” origins.

For example, tariff models that encourage consumption during peak renewable energy generation hours can not only reduce the load on networks but also make electricity cheaper for consumers.

Legislative challenges and the need for rapid changes

Despite positive developments, several issues remain open. The law on energy storage has not yet fully come into effect, which hinders the development of innovative solutions. Moreover, the renewable energy support system is currently focused on large projects, while the potential of local generation facilities remains untapped. Without rapid updates to the regulatory environment, all innovative ideas risk remaining only on paper.

Renewable energy and suppliers: allies, not competitors

The development of renewable energy is changing the electricity supply market. In 2024, the share of renewable energy in total production reached 11%, and up to 18% in summer months. By 2030, this figure should grow to 27%.

For us as suppliers, this means new challenges: the need for balancing, accurate forecasting, and creating tariff products that work in the interests of consumers. Hybrid solutions, combining basic supply and local generation, are becoming the main trend of 2025.

Business and households: what will change?

The electricity market is changing for consumers as well. Businesses will have more opportunities to earn through flexible consumption programs and dynamic tariffs. Households will be able to participate more actively in the market as prosumers – not only consuming but also selling excess electricity.

2025 will be a turning point for suppliers: we will either become partners with consumers or remain in the past along with old approaches.
