Alone in the field is not a warrior: why it's time to pay serious attention to business associations

01.07.2025

Everyone who runs a business in the energy sector knows this feeling. You are busy with daily tasks, putting out fires, planning… And at the same time, there are global problems that cannot be solved from your office: illogical laws, unpredictable decisions of the regulator, lack of information about what will happen tomorrow. And for years we have been used to solving this alone. But experience shows: this approach no longer works. The future lies in associations. And these are not just nice words, but a completely practical thing.

A familiar situation: a new regulation is issued, and you understand that it will hit your business hard. What to do? You can write an official letter. It will most likely be registered and put in a long drawer. And now there is a different scenario. When such a problem arises, we get together – ten, twenty, thirty companies that are directly affected by it. Together we analyze, prepare a joint, reasoned position with calculations and go with it to the regulator or to a specialized committee. One voice is easy to ignore. But the voice of a significant part of the market is much more difficult. We have seen this repeatedly: it was after such collective appeals that a dialogue began, and the initial ideas were revised in favor of more balanced ones. Because the authorities see that this is not a whim of one company, but a systemic problem of the industry. In fact, participation in the Energy Club is an effective tool for protecting your own business.

The information flow is huge now. But news from websites is one thing, and understanding why something is happening and what will happen next is quite another. You will not find such understanding in press releases. It is born in live conversations. A professional community is such a place. When the heads of generating companies, suppliers, representatives of Ukrenergo and the National Energy Regulatory Commission of Ukraine are present at one meeting, the most valuable thing begins. Someone shares their experience, someone asks a direct uncomfortable question to an official, someone talks about a trend they noticed in the market. It is like a closed professional chat, only live. You hear not only the official position, but also real thoughts. This allows you to check your watch, see the market not only from your own bell tower and, as a result, make a balanced decision.

Everyone is used to competing in the market. But the paradox is that often a reliable partner or contractor can be found precisely among competitors. Why? Because everyone is in plain sight here. When you are looking for a contractor for a complex project, a recommendation from a colleague from the Energy Club whom you trust weighs much more than any advertising. This reduces risks. When a young company comes to the community, it immediately finds itself in the center of events, gets acquainted with key players and integrates into the market much faster. The most important thing that arises in such an environment is trust. In the market, we can fight for the client, but here, discussing common problems, we are partners. And this ability to cooperate is a sign of a healthy, civilized business.

And last but not least. The market is changing wildly. Distributed generation, European integration… To be effective, you need to constantly learn. And the best training is where the teachers are not theorists, but practitioners. That is why we started to create highly specialized courses. When someone who built them himself talks about financial models for solar power plants, it has a completely different value. People get not just knowledge, but ready-made practical experience that can be applied immediately. And the demand for such training is huge.

So, what is a business association like Energy Club today? It is not just meetings over coffee. It is a completely pragmatic tool for your business. It is your voice in a dialogue with the authorities. It is your source of current information. It is your circle of trust for finding partners. And it is your university for development.

Because the era of loners is over. Today, the winner is the one who knows how to work in a team.
