The Ukrainian energy sector is undergoing the most rapid transformation in its years of independence. We are transitioning from chaotic survival to building a smart, resilient, and decentralized system.
In recent months, the discourse within the Ukrainian energy community has fundamentally changed. The focus has shifted from the megawatts of large power stations to the practical questions of local solutions: “Where can we get a gas turbine?”, “How do we connect a solar station?”, “Is there enough grid capacity?”.
This isn’t just talk. Distributed generation has ceased to be a textbook concept—it has become our answer to the enemy’s attempts to plunge the country into darkness. Across Ukraine, often chaotically but with incredible perseverance, hundreds of new energy facilities are emerging. Industry, communities, and the agricultural sector—they have all become energy producers, investing in their own resilience.
This process is a testament to the incredible adaptability and strength of Ukrainian society. But now, as the first wave of project implementation is in full swing, the time has come for a sober analysis.
Behind every success story lie numerous systemic problems that could slow this vital movement. The main ones include the grid’s lack of readiness for mass connections, a shortage of accessible financing, and bureaucratic hurdles that persist despite declared simplifications.
We risk creating islands of energy independence that cannot operate fully within a unified system. We risk spending billions on equipment that will not be used effectively.
That is why the Energy Club is initiating a frank discussion. On August 21 at 12:00 PM, we will hold an online meeting in a talk-show format titled “Energy Freedom”. Our goal is to bring together the very people who are implementing projects “in the field.” We are specifically inviting speakers from our club’s member companies to discuss their real-world, not theoretical, experience.
The following participants have confirmed their attendance so far:
We are awaiting confirmation from several other key speakers and will announce the final lineup soon.
At the meeting, we will focus on the main barriers and collectively work to develop recommendations to overcome them. How can we make distributed generation not just “backup power,” but a profitable business integrated into the market?
Today’s projects are the foundation upon which we must build a new, decentralized, and resilient energy system. This meeting is a step toward developing a joint action plan.
We invite everyone for whom this topic is vital to join our conversation.
