The Pitfalls of Independent BESS Import: Why Local Support Matters More than Savings on Equipment

11.03.2026

On February 25, a closed online meeting “BESS Insider” took place, bringing together 32 representatives of Energy Club member companies. This event was organized as a platform for an open exchange of experience. No classic lectures or general phrases — only real cases, discussions of technical challenges, and an open debate about the problems of installing Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

During the meeting, Yevhen Prylepko, Director of Interconti Trading, shared his experience. The company is the exclusive representative of the energy storage system manufacturer Otis Edge (which has been in the Bloomberg rankings for over a year and a half). However, the expert built his speech not as a marketing presentation of his own product, but as an honest analysis of real situations in the Ukrainian market.

Yevhen drew attention to a common problem: investors often try to save money by independently purchasing equipment abroad (particularly in China). However, when the systems arrive in Ukraine, customers face a lack of proper local technical support for their launch.

The expert said that Interconti Trading specialists repeatedly had to save such projects. Clients approached them with requests to help integrate equipment supplied by other companies. In fact, the team had to take on the functions of the manufacturer and service department for “foreign” systems to make them work correctly.

Separately, during the discussion, Yevhen emphasized the critical importance of correct financial modeling. Many investors do not know how to correctly calculate the payback: they do not take into account grid losses, additional infrastructure elements, and various operating scenarios. According to historical data from the DAM (Day-Ahead Market) in Ukraine, the real return on investment in BESS can be about four years, but for an accurate understanding, the expert advises always calculating several different scenarios together with suppliers.

In Yevhen Prylepko’s opinion, it is such an open dialogue, the analysis of practical errors, and full project support — from preparation and design to implementation and operation — that will allow Ukrainian businesses to avoid financial losses and build reliable energy independence.
