The catalyst for the development of solar energy was the power outages in the summer of 2024, according to Vladyslav Sokolovsky, Chairman of the Board of the Solar Energy Association of Ukraine:
“Then many entrepreneurs thought about installing solar power plants for self-consumption. Accordingly, last year, according to our Association, about 800 MW of solar generation facilities were installed for self-consumption.
Solar energy is very helpful in the spring and summer. From July 1 of last year, VAT and customs duties on the import of panels were abolished, which also gave impetus to an increase in the number of solar power plants for self-consumption. Large, medium and small businesses, small households are thinking about their own energy security.”
“Now, solar power plants are mostly installed with energy storage facilities. The year before last, a law on green transformation was adopted. A new legal instrument has appeared – an active consumer. Entrepreneurs have the opportunity to sell part of the electricity and thus support the general electricity grid and receive some financial profit, in addition to consumption.
The construction of solar power plants is supported by financial opportunities for entrepreneurs: state banks operate under the program “Affordable Loans 5-7-9%. In addition, last year the Decarbonization Fund was launched, which provides support to those who build solar power plants,” said the chairman of the board of the Solar Energy Association of Ukraine.
The existing problems of installation companies are related to the lack of personnel. Our Association takes an active part in programs to train new employees for businesses who will install solar power plants. We work with the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute.
We at the Association see the interest of Western companies in our market, in particular in the energy industry, in the solar segment. Investors are ready to build industrial solar power plants. But, of course, in wartime there are great risks.“
