Ukraine’s Strategic Role in Biomethane Trade: Key Insights from PONTON: United Seas for Gas Conference 2025

24.09.2025

Valerii Bezus, Vice President of Energy Club, spoke at the United Seas for Gas Conference 2025 (US4GAS) organized by PONTON, where he presented Ukraine’s vision as a strategic partner of the EU in the development of biomethane production, transportation, and trade.

In his speech, he emphasized that the Energy Club is Ukraine’s leading business community, uniting key companies from the energy sector and related industries. His professional journey is closely linked to the development of bioenergy: from 2021 to 2023, he headed the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine, where the legislative and institutional framework for biomethane production was established, and a registry and a system of guarantees of origin were introduced.

A significant milestone was the memorandum on a strategic partnership in the field of biomethane, hydrogen, and other renewable gases, signed in February 2023 between Ukraine and the European Union. According to Valerii Bezus, this document laid the foundation for infrastructure development, investment attraction, and ensuring access for Ukrainian biomethane to European markets.

Today, interest in biomethane in Ukraine is extremely high. Large agricultural companies that already have biogas plants are ready to quickly upgrade them for biomethane production. Pilot deliveries to the EU in 2025 have proven that this is not just a prospect, but a reality.

Special attention in the speech was given to trade opportunities. Biomethane from Ukraine can be exported physically through interconnectors to neighboring EU countries or sold virtually through the transfer of guarantees of origin. This opens new niches for traders and corporate consumers seeking to reduce their carbon footprint. At the same time, the key task remains certification and bringing Ukrainian regulations into full compliance with EU requirements.

An equally important topic was the role of biomethane in Ukraine’s energy security. In the context of Russian aggression, it can support critical infrastructure, reduce dependence on natural gas imports, and contribute to economic recovery.

Concluding his speech, Valerii Bezus stressed the need for partnership between Ukrainian and European businesses, governments, system operators, and investors. Only through close cooperation is it possible to transform Ukraine’s potential into a practical tool for Europe’s energy integration and security.

The Energy Club will continue to be a platform that supports this dialogue and helps businesses participate in creating a sustainable energy future for Ukraine and Europe.
