Perspectives of Ukrainian exporters, power producers, and European market participants

Energy Club continues its special project dedicated to the impact of the CBAM mechanism on Ukrainian energy, industry, and trade with the European Union.

During the first meeting, project participants examined the risks and practical challenges that CBAM creates for electricity trade between Ukraine and the EU. The next step will be expanding the dialogue with the participation of Ukrainian industrial companies, European importers, power generators, traders, and international experts.

CBAM is gradually becoming not only a matter of environmental policy, but also an important factor in pricing, product competitiveness, contractual relations, and Ukrainian companies’ access to the European market.

For industrial enterprises, the carbon footprint of production, the origin and characteristics of consumed electricity, the availability of necessary data, and the ability to properly verify them for European partners are becoming increasingly important.

Ukraine has a significant share of nuclear, hydro, and renewable generation. This could potentially become a competitive advantage for Ukrainian industry. However, to leverage this advantage, clear rules, transparent accounting, proper data verification, and tools to confirm the link between low-carbon electricity generation and its consumption by a specific enterprise are required.

For European importers and buyers, it is important to understand how reliable the data from Ukrainian suppliers is, how it should be reflected in contracts, and who will bear financial and legal responsibility for compliance with CBAM requirements.

Energy Club has already formed an initiative group of company representatives, launched a series of interviews with Ukrainian and European experts, and is working on joint documents and proposals. The public meeting is intended to complement this work with the position of industrial consumers, electricity producers, and European market participants.

The discussion plans to invite representatives of Ukrainian industrial enterprises, European importers, low-carbon power producers, energy traders, international experts, relevant government agencies, and European institutions.
