On June 4, 2024, in Budapest, the Energy Club hosted the international Europe-Ukraine Energy Trading Forum. The event became a key platform for direct dialogue between Ukrainian and European energy businesses, bringing together regulators, traders, transmission system operators, and top management from leading companies in the sector. All panel discussions were moderated by journalist and media expert Andriy Kulykov.
The business program kicked off with an analysis of the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system amidst military risks. Representatives of the Energy Community Secretariat — Head of Gas Unit Predrag Grujicic and Head of Electricity Unit Jasmina Trhulj — together with Kyrylo Brazhko, Head of Market Analysis Department at D.TRADING, discussed scenarios for infrastructure recovery and further market integration in times of crisis.
The focus of the next discussion shifted to gas transit and storage issues. Market participants concentrated on the prospects of European traders utilizing Ukrainian underground gas storage (UGS) facilities. Roman Storozhev, President of the Association of Gas Traders of Ukraine, and Artem Petrenko, Executive Director of the Association of Gas Producers of Ukraine, shared their vision of the situation. Willem Coppoolse, Director of ERU Group, and Maksym Nemchynov, Advisor to the Chairman of the Board of Odessagaz, presented the business perspective and opportunities for new supply routes.
The discussion continued with the electricity block, where the key topics were cross-border trade, investment, and system balancing. Andrii Nemyrovskyi, Member of the Management Board at NPC Ukrenergo, and Bohdan Sukhetskyi, Deputy General Director of Ukrhydroenergo, outlined the main challenges for system operators. Exchange instruments were covered by Oleksii Dubovskyi, Chairman of the Exchange Committee of the Ukrainian Energy Exchange, while investment plans for nuclear generation were presented by Hartmut Jacob, Vice President of Energoatom. Kateryna Danylkova, Deputy Director of Guaranteed Buyer SE, also took part in the discussion on trading aspects.
The forum concluded with a discussion on regulatory policy and the adaptation of Ukrainian legislation to EU standards. Oleksandr Havva, Director General of JSC Market Operator, and Christian Baer, Secretary General of Europex, analyzed the implementation of the REMIT regulation in detail, which is a necessary condition for wholesale market transparency and investor confidence.
