On November 20, the Energy Club forum “Energy of Freedom: Resilience and New Opportunities for the Energy Storage Systems Market in Ukraine” took place in Kyiv. The event focused on the role of energy storage technologies in ensuring the country’s energy security, system stability, and the development of decentralized infrastructure.

The forum brought together leading players in the energy market — business, investors, regulators, and government representatives. The key goal was to form a shared vision of a profitable and transparent energy storage market that will strengthen Ukraine’s energy independence.

In the panel “Strategy, Investment, and Business Models: How to Make the BESS Market in Ukraine Profitable?”, one of the speakers was Andrii Antonov, Technical Director of Solar Steelconstruction LLC, a partner company of the forum. He presented the company’s innovative product — the single-axis solar tracker HSAT HORIZON — as a tool for increasing the profitability of solar power plants (SPPs) in the context of growing electricity market volatility.

Why SPPs Need Changes

Andrii Antonov emphasized: although his presentation is not formally about energy storage systems, it directly concerns the reasons why businesses are starting to install BESS. The market is changing rapidly, the price of electricity is becoming less predictable, and the profitability of standard SPPs with fixed structures is decreasing.

The speaker stressed that the volatility of the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) price has increased significantly, and this is what creates demand for tracker solutions: they provide more generation during the hours when electricity is most expensive.

Experience of “Solar Steelconstruction”

The company has been present in the renewable energy market since 2012 and is part of the Solar Escap Group, which unites over 700 specialists in Ukraine and Europe. During this time, the company has built 206 MW of tracker SPPs in Ukraine and abroad, owns its own power plants both under the “green” tariff and on the DAM, and has a deep understanding of RES facility operation.

In 2024–2025, the company implemented the first solar power plant in Ukraine on HSAT HORIZON tracker structures in the Kirovohrad region. The construction of 90 MW of tracker SPPs is planned for 2026.

HSAT HORIZON: How the Tracker Changes the Economics of SPPs

  1. Increase in Generation During Expensive Hours:

    • +20% generation in the morning and evening hours when the tariff is highest;

    • potential revenue growth of up to +25% due to operation during peak periods;

    • slight decrease in midday generation — but that is when the electricity price is lowest.

  2. Faster Payback in the Long Term: Although tracker solutions are more expensive to build and contain more electronics and mechanics, from the third year of operation, the investor receives significantly higher profit, especially considering the stable rise in electricity prices.

  3. Scalability and Adaptability: HSAT HORIZON is a cluster system that can be expanded gradually: 5 MW today, plus 5 MW tomorrow — without changing the facility’s architecture. The system is also adapted to sites with a slope — a southern slope is particularly beneficial as it increases output.

  4. Ease of Renovation: Unlike old SPPs under the “green” tariff, where module replacement often requires virtually “building from scratch,” in tracker systems, modules can be updated without changing the structures and electrical networks.

  5. Reliable Control System: The tracker features a multi-level control architecture:

    • control units;

    • central controllers;

    • remote secure server;

    • service applications and monitoring system.

    The company provides lifetime support for the monitoring system, but the owner can also manage the station independently.

Full Cycle of Services

“Solar Steelconstruction” provides:

  • site preparation (zero cycle);

  • design;

  • production;

  • construction;

  • maintenance of RES facilities.

The company supports the client throughout the entire operation period of the station.

Synergy of Technologies

Andrii Antonov’s speech was an important highlight of the panel, as it showed that tracker solar power plant technologies do not just increase generation — they boost the investment attractiveness of projects during times of market uncertainty. Combined with BESS, tracker SPPs can become a key element of Ukraine’s new energy infrastructure — flexible, resilient, and profitable.

Answering a question from the forum moderator, Energy Club Vice President Maksym Nemchynov, about how exactly the efficiency increase was calculated and how the additional electricity volumes are planned to be sold, Andrii Antonov explained that it concerns up to a 20% increase in generation from a solar power plant on HSAT HORIZON trackers compared to a station on a static structure. In monetary terms, this provides up to 25% additional profit. Electricity sales will be carried out on the market according to the standard model for SPPs, but with the mandatory use of energy storage systems (BESS). It is the synergy of HSAT HORIZON and BESS, according to the Technical Director of “Solar Steelconstruction,” that allows for significantly improving the economics of such projects.

The forum was held with the support of partners: IKNET and Solar Steelconstruction LLC.
