About the Company

JSC “EKU” is a state-owned energy trading company that carries out operations for the purchase, sale and supply of energy resources for commercial clients.

The company operates in the domestic and foreign energy markets. In 2022, the state-owned energy trader was the leading exporter of electricity to Slovakia, Poland and Romania, as well as one of the leaders in terms of electricity imports from the EU during the 2022-2023 OPR.

The balancing group of JSC “EKU”, which was joined by NNEGC “Energoatom” and the largest electricity consumers in the country, ranks second in size on the Ukrainian market.

A modern trading platform is being created on the basis of JSC “EKU”, which will enable the state to become a competitive player in the energy markets of Ukraine and Europe.

History

In the energy sector, the state plans to increase its presence in the most competitive and difficult to operate market segment – ​​energy trading.

To this end, in June 2022, the state energy trader JSC “Energy Company of Ukraine” was created, 100% of whose shares belong to the state of Ukraine.

Vitaliy Butenko, who has 15 years of experience in implementing large-scale projects in the energy sector, as well as many years of experience in investment banking in Canada, the USA and Europe, was appointed General Director.

He managed to organize the company’s work in a short time, and on August 17, 2022, JSC “EKU” began commercial operations on the domestic and foreign electricity markets.

In less than 2 months, the company brought the state into the leadership in the field of electricity exports – its share was about 45% until the cessation of exports in October 2022. State-owned companies NNEGC Energoatom, NEC Ukrenergo and SE Guaranteed Buyer, thanks to the work of the state trader in the export direction, received income of UAH 2.7 billion. The state strengthened its positions in electricity exports to Slovakia, Romania and Poland. During the 2022-2023 OZP, the company was also one of the market leaders in terms of electricity imports from the EU.

In the domestic market, JSC EKU supplies electricity to the country’s strategic enterprises. In November 2022, the company created the first state balancing group with the participation of the largest electricity producer in Ukraine – SE NNEGC Energoatom.

The entry of the state trader into the energy market of Ukraine changed the paradigm of competition in the country’s energy sector. Now the state is becoming an active player and market maker in Ukraine and neighboring countries.
