Why BESS is Not Just a Battery - It's a New Business Model for the Energy Sector.

29.07.2025

Many people think that a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) is just a big power bank for the grid, storing energy when it’s cheap and selling it when it’s expensive. This is true, but it’s only a small part of the story.

In reality, BESS is much more. It’s a versatile tool that creates value on multiple levels:

  1. It’s a service provider, not just an energy store. BESS often generate most of their revenue not from energy arbitrage, but from providing critical grid stability services: frequency control (FCR, aFRR), voltage support, and providing reserves. These are services that TSOs are willing to pay a premium for.
  2. It’s a tool for “unlocking” renewables. A solar or wind farm paired with a storage system becomes a much more valuable and less risky asset. BESS allows for smoothing out generation peaks, guaranteeing supply on schedule, and avoiding curtailments, which significantly improves the economics of green projects.
  3. It’s a new class of infrastructure assets. Investment funds are increasingly viewing BESS as a distinct asset class, similar to power plants or grids. A whole ecosystem is forming around them: developers, manufacturers, financial institutions, and service companies, creating new market niches.

What are the real economics behind BESS? What regulatory changes are needed to unlock their full potential?

We will be discussing this with leading manufacturers, developers, and investors at our forum, “Balancing Europe’s Energy System,” in Vienna on October 9th.
