Invited Speaker: Michel Verscheure, an expert with many years of experience in the energy sector and founder of YUSO, a company specializing in energy storage asset management in the EU.
About the speaker:
Michel Verscheure holds a doctorate degree, which he obtained from the University of Leuven (Belgium) in 2003, and also completed postdoctoral studies at the Vienna University of Technology (Austria) in 2004. His career began in 2004 at Luminus (Hasselt, Belgium), where he worked as a risk analyst. He then held the position of quantitative analyst at Verbund – Austrian Power Trading in Vienna (Austria) in 2005. Later, Michel headed the structured products department at Electrabel Trading, which is now Engie (2005-2009).
In 2007, Michel started a business in the wholesale trade of renewable energy equipment, focused on installers, mainly photovoltaic systems. This market was actively developing in Belgium from 2007 to 2012, which became the basis for Michel’s current project, YUSO. Together with Bart Pique (former head of trading at Electrabel), Michel founded YUSO in 2012 to direct renewable energy to open electricity markets. The company’s goal was to combine energy volumes entering the grid for industrial (B2B) producer-consumers, taking on the risk of grid access and imbalance of such flows. From the very beginning, YUSO had its own access to short-term electricity markets (DayAhead, Intra-Day) and developed methods for managing energy risks in this volatile environment.
This led to the first agreements on energy storage asset management back in 2016 in the Netherlands. Based on this experience, YUSO began developing its own projects in key markets such as Belgium, which led to the energy supply of Ruien Energy Storage (RES) (25 MW / 100 MW·h) and Deux-Acren Energy Storage (DES) (50 MW / 100 MW·h) in 2022. YUSO helped both projects to financial closure, advising on revenue models based on its personal experience in the Netherlands. Currently, the company is the market leader in TSO-connected large-scale BESS in Belgium (300 MW·h) and holds the first position in the UK (Tollgate BESS 49.5 MW / 60 MW·h).
The company intends to expand in Central and Eastern Europe in the coming years, acting as an active supporter of the use of BESS in open electricity markets, along with more classic assets such as gas and nuclear power plants. Over these years, YUSO has learned from its own experience what renewable energy is capable of, both in terms of its growing importance in the fuel balance and in connection with the imbalances in the grid caused by the intermittent nature of the availability of these sources.
We invite Energy Club members to a closed meeting with Michel Verscheure, a leading expert in the development of distributed generation and energy storage installations (ESI) in the countries of the European Union.
During the meeting, participants will be able to discuss the following issues with the expert:
Event format: The meeting will be held in an interactive format, which provides an opportunity for participants to ask questions to the speaker and exchange views with colleagues.
Registration: Participation in the event is free for Energy Club members. Registration is required and available at the link.
