An exclusive online discussion with Pietro Rabassi, Nord Pool, as a preview to the Vienna Energy Balancing Forum.

Europe’s energy markets are in a state of permanent transformation. Geopolitical shocks, the rapid growth of RES, and the emergence of new players (storage systems, active consumers) are fundamentally changing the rules of the game. Classic market models, designed for the fossil fuel era, are increasingly operating at their limits, turning market operations into constant crisis management.

But what should the market of the future look like? How do we move from reactive measures to proactive, smart design that incentivizes flexibility, ensures stability, and sends the right investment signals?

On the eve of our major forum in Vienna, the Energy Club is pleased to host this exclusive online discussion. It is an opportunity to hear the strategic vision from one of the key market players, Pietro Rabassi of Nord Pool, on how exchange platforms are evolving, what new products are needed to integrate flexibility, and what the future role of power exchanges is in this new reality.

This discussion will serve as an ideal prelude to the Vienna Energy Balancing Forum, where we will combine the market perspective with the views of system operators (TSOs/DSOs) and regulators to form a holistic picture of Europe’s future energy system.

Key Discussion Questions:

  • The Post-Crisis Market: How have recent energy crises permanently changed European power markets? What are the main weaknesses they have exposed in the current market design?
  • The Future of Flexibility Markets: How can we create markets that properly value and remunerate flexibility (from BESS, Demand Response, etc.)? Are separate platforms needed, or should flexibility be integrated into existing markets (day-ahead, intraday)?
  • The Evolving Role of the Power Exchange: How is the role of power exchanges like Nord Pool changing? From simple energy trading platforms to hubs offering more complex services for risk and flexibility management?
  • Digitalization and New Products: How will digitalization and AI change the way electricity is traded? What new trading products or platforms do you see on the horizon?
  • Coupling Markets with Grids: How can we better align market signals with the physical needs of grid operators (TSOs & DSOs)? What is the key to improving coordination between market operators, TSOs, and DSOs in the future?
